Eligibility

To be eligible for our School Direct programmes, the following qualifications, experience and attributes are required:

Primary

  • A UK Undergraduate honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.1 or above
  • A UK Undergraduate honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 may be considered under certain circumstances
  • GCSE Grade Cs or above in Science, English and Mathematics (or equivalent)

Secondary

  • A UK Undergraduate degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.1 or above
  • A UK Undergraduate honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 may be considered under certain circumstances
  • GCSE Grade Cs or above in English and Mathematics
  • It is important that you have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach but if your degree subject does not link closely with the teaching subject, you may be eligible for a subject knowledge enhancement course
 

All applicants will also need to:

  • Have successfully completed the Professional Skills’ tests in Literacy and Numeracy. Information regarding this can be found at: www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/apply-for-teacher-training/skills-tests.aspx  and https://www.shu.ac.uk/?sc_itemid=17DC2570-C749-44F6-BAEC-C4074FE7DCE5 
  • Complete a declaration regarding any criminal convictions, clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau regarding suitability to work with young people and a fitness to teach declaration
  • Demonstrate a passion for working with young people
  • Have relevant experience of being in a school setting and evidence of why they want to teach
  • Application for the School Direct programme is made through an online application process on the UCAS website.
  • To give everyone as good a chance as possible of getting a place that's right for them, UCAS have divided the process into two parts – Apply 1 and Apply 2.

The School Direct Training Programme focuses on developing teaching skills. You should have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach before you start training. If your degree subject does not link closely to your chosen teaching subject, it is recommended that you undertake a subject knowledge enhancement course before you begin training.

In addition, all candidates applying for initial teacher training (ITT) courses are required to have passed the literacy and numeracy professional skills tests before starting teacher training.
